Super Saturday: Professional Development Day for Literacy Educators

Date / Time

March 7, 2020

8:30 am - 2:30 pm

For the second year, the UIC College of Education is hosting a professional development day for Chicago area educators with a focus on student literacy, language, culture, and learning. Join us for keynotes and workshops with your fellow educators to learn & connect, leave with ideas you can use right away, and earn CPDUs.

Opening Keynote & Schedule

Join us any time after 8 a.m. to grab your seat for the welcome keynote. At 8:30 a.m. Dr. Kim Parker, co-founder of #DisruptTexts (@TchKimPossible), will open the day.

After that, we will break out into workshops that match your grade levels and interests, and also convene as a group for a workshop offered by Sara K. Ahmedauthor of Being the Change: Lessons and Strategies to Teach Social Comprehension and Upstanders.

We will end the day celebrating student voice with Kevin Covalfounder of Louder Than a Bomb.

Lunch

Lunch at 605 Commons is included with the cost of admission. 605 Commons is a short walk from the College of Education, and time will be built into the day for a lunch break. If you’d like to bring your own lunch, there will be some rooms open for gathering at the College, too.

Transit & Parking

The UIC College of Education is located across the street from the UIC Halsted Blue Line stop (Morgan St. entrance). Paid parking is also available at lots near the building.

Payment & Scholarships

Registration and payment for the event are done through EventBrite. We do our best to keep costs low, but we realize that cost may be a limiting factor. Reach out to Dr. Nate Phillips (phillipn@uic.edu) if you are in need of a scholarship to attend.

The event is hosted by Literacies@Chicago, a group of faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction who teach and coordinate the Master’s in Language, Literacies, and Learning program and the PhD in Literacy, Language and Culture program. Follow them on Twitter @UIC_Literacies.
