UIC camps teach theater, jazz, band to high school performers

High-school students can learn theater, jazz and symphonic skills from university professors and arts professionals while sampling campus life in new summer camps at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Jazz Camp
July 14-25
Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Playing in combos of six or fewer under noted performers on the UIC jazz faculty, students will learn instrument technique, theory, jazz history, improvisation and listening skills. Professional jazz musicians will offer interactive performances and demonstrations. The camp will be directed by Andy Baker, UIC Jazz Ensemble director.

Faculty will include:

  • Ernie Adams, drums
  • Andy Baker, trombone
  • Jim Gailloreto, saxophone
  • Marquis Hill, trumpet
  • Stuart Miller, bass
  • Dan Murphy, piano
  • Zvonimir Tot, guitar

Fee: $475, including coursework, materials, lunch, and recreational activities.

Theatre Camp
July 14-25
Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Teaching artists from Lookingglass Theatre Company will lead students in creating an original work. UIC School of Theatre and Music faculty will teach workshops and master classes in voice, movement and costume design. The camp will be directed by Jason Martin, clinical assistant professor.

Faculty will include:

  • Kristy Hall, design
  • David Kersnar, original work
  • Jenny Lamb, original work
  • Jason Martin, voice
  • Thom Pasculli, movement

Fee: $475, including coursework, materials, lunch, and recreational activities.

 

Symphonic Band Camp
July 28-Aug. 2
Monday-Saturday, 4-8 p.m.

Students can expand their repertoire through intensive rehearsal with one of two wind bands and instrumental master classes. The learning culminates in a concert featuring literature studied throughout the camp. The camp will be directed by Jose Oliver Riojas, assistant professor and director of UIC Bands.

Faculty will include:

  • Jose Oliver Riojas, assistant professor and director of UIC Bands
  • Nicholas Carlson, pep band director

Fee: $245, including coursework, materials, lunch, and recreational activities.

For all camps, financial aid and scholarships are available. Students who register for Symphonic Band Camp along with Theatre or Jazz Camp will be charged $620, a $100 discount.

All camps will be held on the lower level of UIC’s Education, Theatre, Music and Social Work Building, 1040 W. Harrison St.
