High school students can learn theatre and symphonic band skills from university professors and arts professionals while sampling campus life in summer camps at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

High school students enact an original piece in last year’s camp at UIC.

The programs develop practical knowledge, cultural sensitivity, resourcefulness and imagination in emerging artists. Day-camp students will find that Chicago’s largest, most diverse university offers a relaxed, open environment during the summer.

Symphonic Band Camp
July 27-31
Monday-Friday, 4-8 p.m.

The symphonic band camp is designed as an intensive five-day ensemble experience that allows students to grow musically in an exciting learning environment. They will expand their repertoires through intensive rehearsal with a wind band and develop their skills in instrumental master classes. At the end of the camp, they will perform a concert featuring music studied throughout the week.

The camp will be directed by José Oliver Riojas, assistant professor and director of UIC Bands; and Nicholas J. Carlson, assistant director of the UIC Bands.

Students should have some experience playing in ensembles.

Fee: $125, including coursework, materials and recreational activities.

For each camp, limited financial aid and scholarships are available. Students may register for both camps for $550, a $50 discount.

Students must register by June 15. Early registration is encouraged, as spaces are limited. Information and registration forms are available at stmsummercamps.uic.edu or by calling (312) 996-2867.

Both camps will be held in UIC’s Education, Theatre, Music and Social Work Building, 1040 W. Harrison St.
