UIC’s 24th annual Blues Cabaret set for Friday

Zora Young headlines the Blues Cabaret Friday.

UIC concludes this year’s celebration of Black History Month Friday with the 24th annual Blues Cabaret, featuring Chicago blues artist Zora Young.

The opening band is Brother Jacob & His Blues Crew, featuring Jacob Schulz, a UIC student majoring in urban and public affairs.

Over a career of more than three decades, Zora Young’s performances and recordings as a solo artist have showcased her versatility and mastery of the blues, jazz, country and gospel.

Young, a distant relative of blues legend Howlin’ Wolf, has made more than 30 tours of Europe and appeared as a featured performer seven times at the Chicago Blues Festival.

She has performed with notable artists like B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Junior Wells, Jimmy Dawkins, Bobby Rush and Professor Eddie Lusk.

Schulz, who brought his band to the Windy City Stage at the 2013 Chicago Blues Fest, released his first album, “Blues from Below,” in October.

The Blues Cabaret begins at 7 p.m. in the UIC Forum. Admission is $25 and includes a soul food buffet. UIC student tickets are available at the door for $10 (one per student i-card).
