‘City/Cité’ addresses race in U.S. and France

The Great Cities Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago presents “City/Cité: A Transatlantic Exchange,” a symposium organized by UIC, Cultural Services of the French Embassy, and the University of Chicago, featuring urban historian Thomas J. Sugrue.

DETAILS:

Leading scholars, policymakers, artists, community organizers and activists from both sides of the Atlantic will explore inequality, race and the state of urban democracy in the U.S., France and beyond.

On Nov. 3, Thomas J. Sugrue, professor of social and cultural analysis and history at New York University, will deliver a keynote address on “The Urgency of a Transatlantic Exchange.”

On Nov. 4, Mary Pattillo, professor of sociology at Northwestern University, will speak on “The Future of Black Metropolis.”

Each day will feature three panel discussions. Topics include:

  • Employment and community development in an era of austerity
  • Building bonds of trust across racial and ethnic lines
  • Neighborhoods in transition
  • Police-community relations in transatlantic perspective
  • Youth programs in the arts
  • Racial discrimination and anti-discrimination in the U.S. and France
