Cynthia Klein-Banai, assistant vice chancellor and director of sustainability, oversees UIC’s commitment to greenhouse gas reduction, recycling, and transportation enhancement. She has helped advance sustainable infrastructure at the university through energy efficiency, renewable energy, grounds, water and stormwater management, waste and recycling, and transportation initiatives. Klein-Banai coordinates UIC’s sustainability strategic planning; sustainability internships for students; and public outreach and training programs. She is an adjunct assistant professor in the UIC School of Public Health.
A graduate of Washington University, Klein-Banai received a master’s degree in environmental science from Hebrew University and her Ph.D. in environmental and occupational health sciences from UIC. Her doctoral dissertation was on measures of sustainability for colleges and universities.
